When Lloyd enrolled in the University of York’s online MSc in International Business, Leadership and Management in 2019, he was already a seasoned Foreign Service Officer with a strong background in trade policy. Yet, the programme profoundly reshaped his perspective, giving him a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the complex dynamics that drive global business. 

Why did you choose to study International Business, Leadership and Management at York?

I wanted to broaden my perspective beyond traditional policy frameworks. York’s cutting-edge curriculum integrated strategic management with real-world application, which was exactly what I was looking for. The programme challenged me to think differently about global issues and gave me the tools to approach them with clarity and foresight.

What did you gain from the course?

I vividly recall a group project where we analysed cross-border trade negotiations. Our solution, inspired by York’s rigorous approach, reflected strategies I would later apply in high-stakes diplomatic negotiations. The emphasis on critical thinking, fostered through dynamic discussions and expert mentorship, honed my ability to address complex international challenges strategically.

What have you gone on to do since graduating?

This transformative experience laid the foundation for my appointment as ‘Chargé d’Affaires a.i.’ in 2021 at the Embassy of Guyana in Brussels - a role I held for three years. It demanded a unique blend of leadership, agility, and diplomacy. The strategic insight and global business acumen I acquired at York proved invaluable - whether negotiating trade agreements or leading multicultural teams, I drew daily on the tools the programme had given me.

How has the course influenced your outlook?
